Barb Matijevich

MA, LPC

My work is grounded in a simple belief: human beings make sense.

Even the behaviors we struggle with most—anxiety, people-pleasing, shutdown, perfectionism, anger, compulsive caretaking, difficulty with intimacy—usually began as intelligent adaptations to difficult circumstances. Rather than asking, "What's wrong with you?" I'm more interested in understanding what your nervous system learned, why it learned it, and whether those strategies are still serving you now.

I approach therapy through a trauma-informed, attachment-based lens that integrates EMDR, developmental psychology, sex therapy, neuroscience, and mindfulness. While I value research and evidence-based practice, I am less interested in assigning labels than in helping people understand themselves with greater clarity and compassion.

Over the years, I've become increasingly convinced that lasting change does not happen through shame, force, or self-criticism. No positive change comes from a harsh place of judgment. Healing tends to occur when people feel safe enough to tell the truth, curious enough to explore new possibilities, and supported enough to practice something different.

My clients are often thoughtful, sensitive people who have spent years trying to get it right. Many are navigating the effects of trauma, difficult family systems, religious or purity culture wounds, chronic stress, relationship challenges, chronic illness, or the complicated task of learning how to be kinder to themselves. Together, we work to understand old patterns, expand capacity, strengthen boundaries, deepen connection, and create more choice where there once felt like only reaction.

I don't believe therapy is about becoming a different person. I think it's about releasing what prevents you from being fully yourself.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is movement toward ease.

My fee is $200 per hour, although I do have a few sliding scale spots. (Currently, these are full, but people tend to cycle in and out of therapy so there are openings occasionally.) Unfortunately, I don’t take insurance but can issue a Superbill that you can submit to your insurance if you have out of network benefits and the bandwidth to be a squeaky wheel!

Call or text 512-975-2161. Your initial consultation is free.

My definition of therapy is movement toward ease. It is my deepest wish as a therapist to see you walk in the world in harmony with yourself.

I believe that trauma is the universal experience --we all have trauma in our past or present --but what is traumatic for one person might not be for another. Childhood trauma often sets the stage for trauma in our adult lives and so the work becomes centered around meeting our younger selves with great compassion and tenderness while honoring the choices that helped us survive.

And if trauma is the universal experience, then how we are in our sexuality is a metaphor for how we are in the world. I offer sex therapy as a means of bringing into alignment our sexual beliefs about ourselves in a healthy, sex-positive, shame-free way.
